the nose knows

Yesterday, Norwood asked me this question “Is it true? The nose pad of a cat is ridged in a pattern that is unique.” Well Norwood, I did a little research last night and asked a few of my cat pals to help. Here is some photographic proof that what you asked is indeed true!

Every cat's nose pad or nose leather is different...
like a human fingerprint

Cats use their noses not only for smelling,
but also for detecting temperature changes.

Pickles
A cat's nose leather may be either black or pink,
depending on genetics and the cat's basic coloring.

Spud
It is a pretty tough surface, probably from cats'
propensity to stick their noses into places they shouldn't be.

Baby - a few more interesting nose facts...
The cat's nasal organ is comparatively larger than a human's; their sense of smell more than ten times stronger. Cats also have a body part called the vomeronasal organ or Jacobsen's organ that helps them process what they smell. Located in the roof of their mouth near the front, this organ is often used when a cat is trying to process the smell of sexual orientation of another cat, especially when mating. This explains why you will sometimes see a cat opening his mouth and literally breathing in hard enough to "taste" whatever it is that they are smelling.

So there you have it Norwood...
and now it's time for me to relax!

That was very interesting, Bruce. We loved all the noses you showed! KISS, KISS, KISS. Siena has a two coloured nosie and Chilli's pink.
It's so silly that the website is down right now. We tried too. Misha deserves to win, he's got what it takes! It would be so cool if you tried again later.
Have a very good weekend.

Bruce, those were some really good facts that we didn't know about. Thanks fur nosein' around fur us!

Yes, 'beans are really mean to cats and sometimes to dogs but we are small and we think that when they want to be really mean they find one of us. Every night before alla' us goes to bed momma says a prayer with alla' us gathered 'round her for alla' the animals in the world that are hungry, scared, hurt or homeless. It is the least we can do...

Wow this is so cool. We didn't know that. So Jordie and Shmed have nose prints too. hehe Mom will have to post a picture of them soon..
When the water gets cold we usually try to get in the water but mom doesn't let us.. Something about us catching cold. Hmm we will have to think on that one..
Usually we just go for long walks while Dad digs in the dirt...

OK. Where can we get one of those? A cat nose. Sounds like you've got some definite advantage. We wonder if all that holds true for dogs' noses? Hmmm. Gotta research that someday. But in the meantime, we've got a particular doggie nose poking out a hole. Come by in the next few days and you'll see!

GREAT photos and lots of GREAT info! We love that kind of stuff!
Love,
Jake and Fergi (two of your doggie friends - thanks!) xxoo
